Meet Horia-Iulian State – Student of the month | Brainster

Brainster students are startling individuals.

That’s why each month Brainster shines a spotlight on one of the students, who is working hard to realise their dreams and ambitious career goals.

The Student of the Month is the one that has achieved exceptional success at the Brainster Bootcamp.

The student that triumphs the month: has a creative approach to working on real-life projects;  takes responsibility for completing the tasks assigned by the instructors on time; attends and actively participates in classes.

Meet Horia-Iulian State, a student from the Data Science Bootcamp at Brainster, and a Student Spotlight for March 2021.

The following statement from Filip, the instructor from the Data Science Bootcamp points why Iulian is chosen to be а Student Spotlight for this month:

‘Since early on in the Math & Stats module, Julian has been a positive spot in the group. Apart from fostering curiosity and open-mindedness, he demonstrated an unwavering will to build onto existing knowledge and acquire new skills, even if it meant facing some demons from the past education. Finally, his outgoing, jocular spirit has made our in-class experience smoother, and invaluable.’

✨ Meet Iulian!

Brainster: Tell us a bit about yourself. What were you doing before you came to Brainster?

Iulian: I started the university some time ago, but I quit out of time-money convenience that time, but not giving up on the domain just yet. Before Brainster, I was migrating from a “gastro” job to another, with a repressed interest in technology and coding, and I decided I need a way to gain and sharpen skills and make better use of them.

Brainster: What is your typical day in Brainster’s Data Science Bootcamp?

Iulian: We just finished Math & Statistics Module which has been a bit more challenging than other modules. This in particular, because you need to imagine some good mathematics semester compressed in an 8-week module.  Lectures are rich in content, which you have to organize a bit.

Very grateful for the efficiency of our tutor who made it all possible in a pretty short time. So on a typical day, I review the content up until that point and enter in “sponge” mode (absorbing information like a sponge) during the lecture.

Brainster: Since the Bootcamp is remote, how do you collaborate with your colleagues and instructors?  What kind of support do you get from the instructors?

Iulian: These are online courses. That is why the whole interaction with colleagues and instructors goes through via Zoom and Slack. Lectures are recorded, which helps to review past units.

The whole Brainster Team are always opened for communication, optimistic in the times that my morale was down, and always open to find a solution for any type of problem that came in the way. I am truly and extremely grateful for that.

Brainster: From the first class of Data Science Bootcamp, I remember…

Iulian: I remember a typical excitement that was suffocating my patience a bit so to say.  All because of the small steps we began with (which were exactly what I needed).

I felt even better getting to know my colleagues, which are always nice to interact with, and helpful with each other when needed.

Brainster: Did you have any coding experience before applying to the Bootcamp?

Iulian: Yes, I had gained some C++ skills at university and later I learned Python on my own and made small experiments with it. However, the Python Module was pretty helpful due to some Tips and Tricks I didn’t know before the course. I am glad I went through the basics again.

Admissions are open for the Fall Data Science Brainster Bootcamp. Join us and future-proof your career by building a top-notch and job-ready portfolio.

Brainster: Since you started learning, what has been the most challenging thing so far?

Iulian: The most challenging things are yet to come. We reviewed Mathematics and Statistics concepts, now we will apply them with Python and specific packages.

Also challenging is to ask the right questions, especially taking advantage of having these amazing tutors with us.

Brainster: What is your favourite area in which you want to be expertise in data science?

Iulian: Right now, I want to go along with the course and see what Machine Learning programmes can do and how they are used. So besides ML / Cognitive Computing Development, Data Analytics can be very appealing.  I find it awesome when a person knows how to extract information, with the right tools and right math concepts.

Brainster: Any last bits of advice that you would give to potential students who want to break into UX Design in 2021?

Iulian: Dear potential students, adopt a growth mindset; have patience understanding the role of data science in real-life situations if you want to be part of the team that looks for solutions. If you are curious and seeking answers, then Data Science is the right choice for you.

But of course, I am still a newbie in the field and have a lot of things to learn ahead of me. However, I am glad I came to Brainster. It made me make some big steps that I would have done in much longer time alone or maybe not at all.
